PENTICTON – Hunter Bishop will spend the next two weeks in a dentist chair. The carnage: four-and-a-half teeth. The price: $5,000.

Painful, but it hardly compares to the hurt the Alaskan Assassin was feeling after the Vernon Vipers lost 5-2 to the Vees in game seven of the B.C. Hockey League Interior Conference semifinal series Tuesday night before 2,105 fans at Memorial Arena.

"It's funny how quick Junior hockey goes," said Bishop, who racked up 93 goals in 177 games over two-and-a-half seasons with Vernon. "This is my fifth year. It goes by pretty quick. It doesn't even seem like it's real. It's over. I know there's good things to come, but it stings a lot. There are a lot of good guys in the room that I'll miss, and a great coaching staff. I've been here three years, I love it. I'd stay here if I could. Time to move on, I guess."

Bishop, who will play alongside Vees' Zac Dalpe, Cory Schneider and Devon Krogh with the Ohio State Buckeyes next year, had a stellar final game, drawing an assist on Kellen Jones' team-high seventh playoff goal, with four minutes remaining. Bishop was earlier stoned by Vees' all-star goalie Alex Evin on a high wrister in the deep slot.

"I think both teams battled hard and it could have gone either way," said Bishop, 20. "Penticton stuck to their game and came out on top. It was a pretty even match, but they got a few more bounces than us. Good luck to 'em. It's too bad it has to end here."

Bishop, who lost one tooth in game action and the rest in separate practice mishaps, including one where Kellen and him collided, was in no hurry to take his equipment off in a dressing room full of distraught players, taking turns comforting one another.

Veteran centre Travis Brisebois, who supplied 60 goals, won hundreds of face-offs and killed numerous penalties in 166 regular-season games in Vernon, perhaps delivered the best eulogy for the fourth-place Vipers.

Last season, the Buckeyes finished second to last in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association at 7-18-3.

Bishop is currently having a “last hurrah” in Vancouver and Whistler with teammates Travis Brisebois and Chris Crowell before driving home to Alaska, where he’ll take on a new Peter Twist training program, and teach hockey clinics.

Bishop will be joined by four other BCHL grads in Ohio State, three of who were on the Vees squad that knocked the Vipers out of the Interior Conference semifinals in seven games.

Vees’ forwards Zac Dalpe and Cory Schneider, and defenceman Devon Krogh, along with forward Taylor Stefishen of the Langley Chiefs, will all be looking to bolster the Buckeyes’ roster next fall.

“As much as I hate those guys on the ice, they’re all really good guys off the ice,” said Bishop, who got to meet Stefishen and Dalpe at the BCHL All-star game in January in Victoria. “I’m sure we’ll have lots of stories to talk about next year.”

Added Stein, also based in Vernon: “They should be a lot stronger next year,” said Stein, “but that’s a heck of a competitive conference. He’ll (Bishop) be playing against a lot of good players in a lot of good hockey programs, so it’ll be interesting to see how he does.

“I expect a lot from him. I like his work ethic and he has the determination to go further.”

It was a good day for Vernon and District Hospice Society as a total of $4695.00 was donated to them by Coldstream Truck Parts and Nolan’s Pharmacy in conjunction with promotions they were running throughout the year at the Vernon Vipers hockey games. Coldstream Truck Parts donated $200 for every short handed goal scored thoughout the 2007-2008 season, and thanks to a lot of goals scored by Hunter Bishop, the total went to $3800.00.

It looks like Ohio State has hired themselves a hitman with some pretty decent credentials.
Vernon Vipers grad Hunter (Alaskan Assassin) Bishop, who committed to play with the Buckeyes next season, has been named the B.C. Hockey League’s Interior Conference MVP award for handling the brunt of the Snakes’ offence all season long.
“I knew it would be close with (Penticton Vees’ netminder Alex) Evin,” said Bishop. “I’m honoured that everyone felt I was the MVP.
“A lot of a player’s success has to do with experience and confidence. I’ve had three great summers where I really improved my game, and that’s had a lot to do with it too.”
Playing on a line with 17-year-old twins Connor and Kellen Jones, Bishop amassed 57-40-97, good enough for third place in league scoring behind.
Over his three seasons with the Vipers, Bishop collected 93 goals – many of them highlight-reel variety – and 84 assists for 177 points in 140 games. Even in his rookie season, Bishop was nearly a point-a-game player, notching 25-29-54 in 56 games.
“He’s got a good skill base and he’s pretty quick,” said Dennis Holland, a Vernon-based scout with the Dallas Stars. “Depending on how he does at college will determine if he has a shot at going pro.
“The progress is there in his game and he’s playing a solid two-way game now. He’s good on both sides of the puck. I think he’ll have a shot.”
This will be Bishop’s second stint on a U.S. college hockey team. He committed to North Dakota as an 18-year-old, but was unable to crack a stacked lineup that boasted the likes of Jonathan Toews (now a rookie standout with the Chicago Blackhawks) and several other top prospects.
Wanting more ice time, Bishop left the Fighting Sioux that Christmas and signed with the Vipers as a red-shirt, taking a full course load at the local college.
The six-foot, 185-pound forward has improved his foot speed since coming to the BCHL. He has earned a reputation for terrorizing defencemen with his ability to finish and make crisp plays at speed, and now he has a top-class release that can make netminders look silly from almost anywhere inside the blueline.
Said Detroit Red Wings scout Marty Stein: “As an overage player, that’s what he’s supposed to do, but Bishop did a whole lot more than your average overage player.
“The only problem is he’s only played in the BCHL the last three years. What he has to do now in Ohio is prove he can take the next step. How will he compete at that level? That’s the question mark. It’s a lot bigger pond there.”

Hunter Bishop of Fairbanks, the Ohio State-bound forward for the Vernon Vipers, bagged MVP honors in the British Columbia Hockey League's Interior Conference after leading the league in goals.

Bishop, 20, earned 57-40--97 totals in 60 games to finish third in the league in points. He also led the circuit in short-handed goals (9). Bishop played half a season at North Dakota in 2006-07 before returning to the BCHL. He's headed to Ohio State in the fall.

Meanwhile, the Coastal Conference MVP also has a Fairbanks connection. Namely, league-leading scorer Carlo Finucci of the Burnaby Express is headed to the UAF Nanooks in the fall.

Finucci, 21, earned 33-69--102 totals in 60 games

Bishop was nominated for Most Sportsmanlike in the League, Dalpe going to Ohio State next year recieved the honor.

Well, the end of the regular season in the British Columbia Hockey League sneaked past me like Alexander Ovechkin stealing a march to the back door for a power-play layup -- the league's 60-game schedule ended last week -- but we are nonetheless happy to report that Hunter Bishop of Fairbanks bagged the circuit's goal-scoring title.

Bishop, the erstwhile North Dakota forward who returned to juniors and is headed to Ohio State in the fall, copped 57 goals in 60 games for the Vernon Vipers. And his 57-40--97 totals in 60 games ranked him third in the league in points.

Also, Bishop led the league in short-handed goals (9) and tied for third in power-play goals (17).

Bishop currently leads the playoffs in scoring, earning 4-4--8 totals in a three-game, first-round sweep of Trail.

UAA's recruit from the BCHL, forward Mickey Spencer of Cowichan Valley, finished with 27-12--39 totals in 53 games. He tied for 20th in the league in goals and tied for fifth in power-play goals (15), and was the league's 79th ranked points producer. He's done -- Cowichan was one of four teams in the 16-team league that did not qualify for the playoffs.

Alaska native leaves North Dakota because of lack of playing time.

With a name like Hunter Bishop, the Vernon Viper sniper was all but born to score goals.

He also has a fancy story these days to go with his flashy handle.

Bishop, 20, returned to the Vipers midway through last season from the powerhouse University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, giving up his scholarship over a lack of ice time and development possibilities.

He's landed a deal with another marquee NCAA team, though, as he's slated to join the Ohio State Buckeyes next fall.

"I hadn't actually talked to Ohio State the first time," says the Fairbanks, Alaska, native, who started with the Vipers in 2005-06. "But as soon as I left North Dakota and they put out that I had been released, Ohio State and my hometown school in Fairbanks were the first I heard from.

"I definitely looked at things from a couple of different angles this time. This time, I made sure it was going to be a better fit."

Part of the appeal for him is that the Buckeyes graduate five forwards at the end of this season.

There's also someone there he's close with. His sister, Teal Bishop, 18, is a freshman rearguard on Ohio State's women's hockey team.

Yes, the parents, Rita and Bill, went original on the names, although their youngest, Vivian, who's in Grade 11, has a more traditional moniker.

Vivian plays hockey too, and that's no surprise considering the family. The Bishops have an outdoor rink in their yard, souped up with boards, four floodlights and even high-end, cold-weather-resistant speakers to blast out tunes.

Hunter and Teal regularly play one-on-one at the rink.

"She's real excited about me coming to Ohio State," says Bishop, who has 18 goals and eight assists in 16 games with Vernon this season. "She's definitely wishing that I was there right now. We're really close."

And how's his relationship with North Dakota?

Amicable, he insists.

Bishop says that he ran into North Dakota assistant coach Dane Jackson in the preseason and the onetime Vancouver Canucks winger from Castlegar said he'd been keeping tabs and was happy Bishop landed with Ohio State.

Keep in mind, of course, that North Dakota is one of the best programs in the U.S., and usually has its pick of recruits.

Also at play here is that Bishop was initially slotted as a 2007-08 freshman for North Dakota, but when a roster spot opened just before last season they bumped him up a year, maybe setting things askew.

"I got a call in July and they asked me if I wanted to come then," says Bishop. "It was kind of a shocker.

"In the end, it wasn't the right fit for me. Basically, it was a combination of the age of the players that were there and the time I felt it would take to get a shot to prove myself.

"I have nothing bad to say about them. The coaches were great and I loved the players there."

Hunter Bishop has worn many hockey jerseys in his life. West Valley Wolfpack. Fairbanks Ice Dogs.
On July 20, the hometown original found out that the next jersey he wears will be red, white and blue and will have the letters USA printed on the front.

Bishop was named to the 2004 United States Under-18 Select Team that will compete against the world's best juniors this month in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

"Wearing the USA jersey has been a dream of mine for a long time," Bishop said Saturday. "I've never been to Europe, and I'm the first person from my family who gets to go there. I hear it's pretty nice."

The U18 Selects will compete in the 2004 Junior World Cup, to be held Aug. 10-15 in Piestany, Slovakia and in Breclav and Hodonin, Czech Republic. Teams from the host countries and the United States will skate against the likes of Canada, Russia, Switzerland, Finland and Sweden.

"Going to the world tournament will be one of the best experiences in my life," Bishop said. "The best kids from all these countries will be there, and it will be great to see where I'm at compared to them.

"There's going to be a lot of exposure," he added. "We've already heard that there will be a lot of NHL scouts."

Bishop is one of three Alaskans to make the squad. Goaltender Drew O'Connell and forward Evan Trupp, both of Anchorage, will travel to Europe as members of the U18 Selects. Trupp's father, Rick Trupp, played college hockey at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and coached here for several years before moving to Anchorage.

The team of two goalies, six defensemen and 12 forwards was selected at the annual Select 17 Festival at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., July 10-16. The final roster was selected after evaluators watched more than 240 players compete for the top spots.

For Bishop, the journey to Europe began at West Valley, where he played high school hockey for a short time under the direction of coach Erik Drygas.

"He's a great coach," said Bishop. "He teaches real good systems play and he's a real nice guy. He's easy to understand and you don't get confused talking to him. The high school players up here overall are pretty good.

"It changes from year to year," he added. "Up here you don't get to play the same amount as you would Outside, but the quality of player is still pretty good."

After a short stay with the Wolfpack, Bishop moved across town to play for the Junior A Fairbanks Ice Dogs and local coach Rob Proffitt.

"Rob was a great coach," said Bishop. "Coming in at the age I did, he was really understanding and patient. I went from playing midget to juniors, that's a big step. He knew that and he hung in there with me, and he told me to keep working hard.

"I ended up getting put with some really good linemates, and everything worked out for me," he said. Bishop compiled 21 points in last year's campaign with the Ice Dogs, netting seven goals and tallying 14 assists.

Bishop said that Proffitt and coach Roger McKinnon were instrumental in getting him a tryout with the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders, a junior A team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa that plays in the United States Hockey League. After the Junior World Cup is over, Bishop will play next season for the Rough Riders.

"They're similar to the Ice Dogs," said Bishop. "It's tier-one Junior A hockey, and from what I've heard, the USHL is a really fast league. They emphasize good feet and skating, and those are some of my better attributes as a player.

"After playing for Proffitt and McKinnon, I felt very prepared for the tryout," he added. "I just felt like it was the right place to go."

Brent Cornelius, who like Bishop played for West Valley, will be a Rough Rider next season as well. The local foursome of Bishop, Cornelius, Derick Bradish and Caleb Harrison all played in last month's Select 17 Festival.

It's been a long journey in Bishop's hockey saga, and he said that a lot of people along they way have been instrumental in his success.

"I would definitely say that a lot of effort and hard work from a lot of people put me in this position," said Bishop. "All of the coaches and players in Fairbanks have really helped me out."

While Bishop's hockey aspirations have him traveling to Europe and Iowa in the near future, the forward was quick to point out that he has other plans on his horizon.

"Only players who are 64 or 65 go straight to the NHL from juniors," said Bishop, who listed himself at 5-foot-11. "I definitely want to play Division I college hockey."

Bishop said that growing up in Fairbanks, of course he loved to watch the University of Alaska Fairbanks play hockey.

"Definitely, I'd love to play for UAF," said Bishop. "We've thought a lot about it. If the opportunity presents itself and the situation is right, it'd be great to play here in college."

For now, Bishop will concentrate on helping the U18 Select Team win its second consecutive Junior World Cup. Bishop leaves for Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, where he will meet with the team and begin practice.

Then after a flight to Vienna and a bus ride to Slovakia, one of Fairbanks' own will be playing for his country.

From Fairbanks Alaska, known as the “Alaskan Assassin”, Hunter Bishop has become a well-known name in the city of Vernon. Bishop started playing for the Vipers in 2005-2006 and in 2007 went to North Dakota on a scholarship. Unhappy with the ice time he was getting, Bishop placed a call to the Vipers and was able to finish the 2006-2007 season with Vernon.
Now 49 games in the 2007-2008 season Hunter Bishop has 48 goals and 32 assists, the most goals in the league and the second most points. When you come to a Vernon Vipers game you are most likely going to hear Bishops name over the PA. In the 10 games played so far in January, Hunter has 13 goals, 11 assists and was named 1st star four times and 2nd star two times. Bishop is not only a great player on the ice; he is great person off the ice. Hunter is a true team player and is always looking out for his teammates and trying to enjoy every minute he gets to play.
Just last week Hunter was part of the Interior Team at the BCHL All Star game that was held in Victoria. Bishop was named Captain for his team and he was very honored to wear the “C”.
“I’ve never worn the “C” in the BCHL and now it’s nice to have a jersey with one on it” Bishop said, “it’s nice to know people think I am a good leader and it was a huge honor to be recognized and named to the All Star team. This was a great opportunity for me and I was also honored to represent the Vernon Vipers.”
Not only was Hunter the Captain of the Interior Team, in the skills competition he also proved himself to be the fasted skater in the league.
“The skills competition was probably one of my favorite moments.” Hunter said and added with a smile, “going head to head against the best guys was a lot of fun and we got to see who was the fastest!”
Hunter took in every moment during the All Star break and spent a lot of his time talking with other players, getting to know his teammates and catching up with old line mates.
“It’s pretty interesting to get to know some of the players you battle with all year. I’ve made some pretty good friends during the week, the other players are pretty good guys and I’m glad I got the opportunity to meet them. I also got hang out with (David) Arduin we were Vipers in 05/06. It was great to see him; he’s a good guy.” Bishop also talked about his experience at the banquet. “It was also a lot of fun at the All Star Banquet listening to Steve Tambellini and Kurt McLean. It’s nice to hear from guys that have been where you want to be and have done what you want to do.”
Hunter, who is 20 years old, has committed to Ohio State for 2008-2009 and will be playing for the Buckeyes. Coming up for Hunter is a game on Wednesday night against the Trail Smoke Eaters where he will be looking to get two more goals for a total of 50 goals in 50 games.

In a 9-3 win over Quesnel on Saturday night in Vernon, Hunter Bishop was able to get a hat trick and two assists for a five point night and now breaks even with an average a goal a game in the regular season. The Vipers were all over Quesnel and outshot them 50-19. With the first period taking over 45 minutes due to fights the Vipers were still able to keep focused with Travis Brisebois getting two goals, Greg Beller getting a goal and two assists and Justin Thomas, John Digness and Rob Short each getting a goal a piece. Well, the end of the regular season in the British Columbia Hockey League sneaked past me like Alexander Ovechkin stealing a march to the back door for a power-play layup -- the league's 60-game schedule ended last week -- but we are nonetheless happy to report that Hunter Bishop of Fairbanks bagged the circuit's goal-scoring title.

Bishop, the erstwhile North Dakota forward who returned to juniors and is headed to Ohio State in the fall, copped 57 goals in 60 games for the Vernon Vipers. And his 57-40--97 totals in 60 games ranked him third in the league in points.

Also, Bishop led the league in short-handed goals (9) and tied for third in power-play goals (17).

Bishop currently leads the playoffs in scoring, earning 4-4--8 totals in a three-game, first-round sweep of Trail.

Now you see him, now you don’t. Vernon Vipers’ roadrunner Hunter Bishop found fifth gear as he won the fastest skater race in the B.C. Hockey League skills contest Wednesday night in Victoria.

Bishop also pocketed a pair of assists as the Interior bowed 15-9 to the Coast in the 37th annual All-Star Classic before 2,219 fans at Bear Mountain Arena.

“Bish won by a landslide, you should have seen him go,” said Viper head coach/GM Mark Ferner. “I think his time was 14.06 seconds so he’ll be checking the websites to see how fast the NHL guys go this weekend.”

Scott Knowles of the Surrey Eagles was second in the one-lap skate.

“Bish played with everybody and he had lots of scoring chances. It wasn’t for a lack of effort that he didn’t score any goals.”

The Coastal Stars outshot the Interior 53-47 and got four goals from game MVP Mikael Bedard of the Nanaimo Clippers. Brian Nugent of the Victoria Grizzlies pulled the hat-trick, while Brodie Reid of the Burnaby Express scored twice and singles came from Daniel Moriarty of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Taylor Stefishen of the Langley Chiefs and Carlo Finucci of Burnaby.

Jordy Christian of the Prince George Spruce Kings supplied three goals for the Interior, while Kevin Limbert of the Trail Smoke Eaters added a pair and singles came from Cory Pritz and Kevin Walrod, both of the Westside Warriors, and Penticton Vees’ Austin Smith and Zac Dalpe.

Interior goalie Alex Evin (Vees) stopped a penalty shot awarded to former Cowichan Valley Capital Clinton Pettapiece, now with Westside.

Smith beat Burnaby’s Brad Hunt in the obstacle course portion of the skills contest, while Reid was the top shooter.

Less than a week after their basketball counterparts signed four players to National Letters of Intent for 2008, the Ohio State men's hockey team welcomed a new class of its own.

After signing a record class a year ago, coach John Markell brought in just seven players for the 2008-09 season, including four forwards and three defensemen. All but two of the recruits come to OSU from the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) – including three teammates from the Penticton Vees –with one player coming from the U.S. National Team Development Program and another from the United State Hockey League (USHL).


Forwards

On offense the Buckeyes landed four players, including the prize of the class Hunter Bishop.

The 6-foot, 185-pound forward from Fairbanks Alaska leads the BCHL with 44 points this season in just 28 games. He originally signed with North Dakota in 2006-07, but after just four games he returned to Vernon Vipers for his second, season. Now in his third season with the Vipers, Bishop will have three years of eligibility in Columbus, where he joins his sister, Teal, who is a freshman defenseman on the women's hockey team.

Joining Bishop up front are two native Canadians. Zac Dalpe – a 6-foot-1 forward from Ontario – plays with five-foot-ten forward Cory Schneider on the Vees. Dalpe has 29 points this season in 22 games, while Schneider, a native of Rochester, N.Y. has 25 points in 28 games.

Dalpe's biggest claim to fame, though, is the hat trick he scored in the championship game of the World Junior A Challenge earlier this month.

The last forward in the class is Taylor Stefishen, who also plays in the BCHL with the Langley Chiefs. From Fairbanks Alaska, known as the “Alaskan Assassin”, Hunter Bishop has become a well-known name in the city of Vernon. Bishop started playing for the Vipers in 2005-2006 and in 2007 went to North Dakota on a scholarship. Unhappy with the ice time he was getting, Bishop placed a call to the Vipers and was able to finish the 2006-2007 season with Vernon.

Now 49 games in the 2007-2008 season Hunter Bishop has 48 goals and 32 assists, the most goals in the league and the second most points.

When you come to a Vernon Vipers game you are most likely going to hear Bishops name over the PA. In the 10 games played so far in January, Hunter has 13 goals, 11 assists and was named 1st star four times and 2nd star two times.

Bishop is not only a great player on the ice; he is great person off the ice. Hunter is a true team player and is always looking out for his teammates and trying to enjoy every minute he gets to play.

Just last week Hunter was part of the Interior Team at the BCHL All Star game that was held in Victoria. Bishop was named Captain for his team and he was very honored to wear the “C”.

“I’ve never worn the “C” in the BCHL and now it’s nice to have a jersey with one on it” Bishop said, “it’s nice to know people think I am a good leader and it was a huge honor to be recognized and named to the All Star team. This was a great opportunity for me and I was also honored to represent the Vernon Vipers.”

Not only was Hunter the Captain of the Interior Team, in the skills competition he also proved himself to be the fasted skater in the league.

“The skills competition was probably one of my favorite moments.” Hunter said and added with a smile, “going head to head against the best guys was a lot of fun and we got to see who was the fastest!”

Hunter took in every moment during the All Star break and spent a lot of his time talking with other players, getting to know his teammates and catching up with old line mates.

“It’s pretty interesting to get to know some of the players you battle with all year. I’ve made some pretty good friends during the week, the other players are pretty good guys and I’m glad I got the opportunity to meet them. I also got hang out with (David) Arduin we were Vipers in 05/06. It was great to see him; he’s a good guy.”

Bishop also talked about his experience at the banquet. “It was also a lot of fun at the All Star Banquet listening to Steve Tambellini and Kurt McLean. It’s nice to hear from guys that have been where you want to be and have done what you want to do.”

Hunter, who is 20 years old, has committed to Ohio State for 2008-2009 and will be playing for the Buckeyes. Coming up for Hunter is a game on Wednesday night against the Trail Smoke Eaters where he will be looking to get two more goals for a total of 50 goals in 50 games.

In what has become a fall tradition the last three years, Chris Porter won UND's Ironman competition again.

UND coaches have to be pleased Porter once again showed up to camp in very good condition. He will need to be a key part of the team's offense this season.

A freshman, Hunter Bishop, took second, which is pretty impressive. People in the Vernon Vipers organization (Bishop's previous team) said that he was an incredibly hard worker and will do whatever it takes to reach his ultimate goal (make the NHL). I'm guessing that work ethic is a major reason UND decided to bring him in this fall, even though he didn't have a monster year in the BCHL.

Friday, June 16, 2006 - On the British Columbia Hockey League Web site, Hunter Bishop called the University of North Dakota his dream college.

The former West Valley High School and Fairbanks Ice Dogs skater is a signature away from making his dream come true.

Bishop, an 18-year-old left wing, verbally committed Monday to skate this coming season for North Dakota, a national powerhouse and member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, which includes the University of Alaska Anchorage and the last three NCAA Division I national champions--Wisconsin this year and Denver in 2004 and 2005.

"I definitely have to say it was their reputation,'' Bishop, in a telephone interview Thursday, said of a reason for choosing North Dakota.

Bishop said his national letter of intent from North Dakota was scheduled to arrive Thursday or today and there will be a signing ceremony sometime today at Sport King.

The Fighting Sioux won seven national titles (1959, 1963, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1997 and 2000) and reached the last two Division I Frozen Fours. North Dakota lost to Denver in last year's championship game and fell to eventual national runner-up Boston College in a semifinal in April in Milwaukee.

Bishop skated last season with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL and recently graduated from Seaton Secondary School in Vernon.

North Dakota coaches started e-mailing him last October, and Bishop had originally planned to return to Vernon for a second season, but he changed his mind after the Fighting Sioux coaches left two messages on his phone recorder when he returned to Vernon May 20 from a senior vacation in Mexico.

"Those calls kind of came out of left field,'' Bishop said. "They expressed that they wanted me to come play next season.''

It's likely that the 6-foot, 190-pound wing could gain a lot of ice time this season. North Dakota graduated only two seniors from last season's 29-16-1 squad, but saw four underclassmen leave the team. Junior forward Drew Stafford, sophomore forward Travis Zajac and junior defenseman Matt Smaby signed contracts with National Hockey League teams and sophomore forward Rastislav Spirko returned to his native Slovakia.

Stafford, who signed with the Buffalo Sabres, was North Dakota's leading scorer last season with 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points in 42 games and he led the nation in shorthanded goals with seven.

"With the amount of guys they lost, it's a pretty unique opportunity for incoming freshman to contribute and be impact guys,'' Bishop said. "They're a team with a lot of speed and they forecheck hard, and skating is my best asset. I'm hoping to step in and be an impact player.''

Vernon general manager Troy Mick said he thinks Bishop will develop into an effective skater for the Fighting Sioux. Bishop earned a BCHL All-Star honor this past season, when he finished as Vernon's third-leading scorer with 25-29-54 totals in 56 regular-season games. He also posted 1-4-5 numbers in 10 playoff contests.

"He was an absolute gem for us,'' Mick said Thursday from Vernon. "He worked as hard off the ice as he did on it. Once he was on the ice, he dazzled fans with his speed and his intensity. He will be sorely missed this year.''

Bishop's transition to college hockey may be helped by him playing in three different Junior A leagues in three seasons. At 16, he skated with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League, and a year later, he played with Cedar Rapids (Iowa) of the United States Hockey League before heading to the BCHL.

"I think I will have a bit of an edge because I experienced three different styles of hockey,'' Bishop said.

"In the USHL, I learned a lot offensively, but they really focus on defense. In the BCHL, I learned the defensive side of hockey, but they played a lot of high-scoring games, too."

Bishop said he learned a "ton'' from Ice Dogs head coach Rob Proffitt.

"Before I got there, I was a take-the-puck-and-go player,'' Bishop said. "He taught me about systems and that I also needed to backcheck.''

Bishop plans to major in business at North Dakota.

Bishop began his hockey career in the Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association house program and played for FAHA competitive teams in the Mite and Squirt divisions.

He then played for the Arctic Lions PeeWee, Bantam and Midget U-16 competitive teams under coach Roger McKinnon.

After a short stint at West Valley, Bishop began his Junior career with the Ice Dogs, scoring a goal in his first game.

He was a member of the USA U-18 Junior World Cup Team in 2004 where he earned Game MVP honors against the Czech Republic and assisted on the game-winning goal against Russia.

Bishop scored 26 goals and had 33 assists in 66 games for Vernon last season. Bishop was on the USHL championship Cedar Rapids team in 2004-05, and he played for Fairbanks in the NAHL as a high school sophomore.

What kind of player is he? I asked his general manager at Vernon, Troy Mick.
Mick: He's one of the best skaters I've seen play in this league in a long time. His top-end speed is phenomenal. He is going to showcase his talents there. I think North Dakota got a great hockey player.

He put up good numbers last season, but they weren't as large as some guys like Erik Felde (Anchorage recruit).
Mick: He's going to take a bit to adjust. I was down there (Grand Forks) for the midget tournament last year and got a chance to see both games against Mankato. It took Matt Watkins, a guy who we had here, a little bit of time to adjust. There's usually an adjustment period for all players. One thing about Hunter, he will excel when he is comfortable. You have to remember that he is 18 years old and has already played three years of Junior A hockey. Our coach this year put him in every situation. He was able to kill penalties and play on the power play.

Can he be an impact player at UND?
Mick: No question. He's not going to score 50 points as a freshman, but he will excel every year he's at North Dakota. He has NHL speed. That's probably the toughest thing to do, is to get guys who can skate at that level. That's one area you won't have to worry about with Hunter Bishop. His forte is going to be speed. He may not be a huge point guy right away, but I can guarantee you he's going to be a huge asset to the team.

He sure is a well-spoken guy.
Mick: In his first year here, he was voted the fans' favorite player. He won over everybody. He does so many things in the community, his family is A-plus... he is everything you look for in a player when you are recruiting. He's a guy who works as hard off the ice as he does on the ice.

That's saying quite a bit, because Hunter says he takes pride in trying to always be the hardest-working guy on the ice.
Mick: If you had 21 guys who worked as hard as him, you'd be in the national championship every year. He's always working on his game. If he finds deficiencies in his game, he's a kid who will work on it. He wants to go to the next level. He wants to play pro hockey, and he's going to do what it takes to get there. I'll tell you a story. I went on a fishing trip to Fairbanks and I ended up staying in his room. All across the room, there aren't pictures of girls or anything like that. He has quotes from coaches and famous people saying how to make him better each day. You don't see that a whole lot with guys his age.

Being so young, does that mean he has potential to continue improving quite a bit?
Mick: He started the year all right and finished the year on fire. I think his development here last year is a big reason he's going to North Dakota. He made the all-star team last year, and he's just hitting the tip of the ice berg on what he can do. We thought he was coming back here next year, and we had him pinned as a 100-point guy. He is going to be sorely missed in this organization.

Hunter Bishop finished third in team scoring with 25 goals and 54 points.

While chuckling at the bickering over scheduling at last weekend's B.C. Hockey League annual general meeting, Vernon Vipers' general manager Troy Mick got a phone call that erased his smile.

All-star winger Hunter Bishop informed Mick he had accepted a scholarship with the NCAA's North Dakota Fighting Sioux for next season.

"We're thrilled for Hunter, but it caught us off guard," said Mick. "It's a double-edged sword because we're ecstatic for him, but on the team side, it's tough to lose a player we had pegged as a 100-point guy."

Bishop, who was voted the Vipers' Most Popular Player, was on holiday in Mexico and then visiting a buddy in California when he got the call from North Dakota. After a quick fly down, he made the decision to commit to the school he's dreamed of playing for since he began his junior career.

"He's an A-plus guy all the way around," said Mick. "He's a great student, he was great in the community and he's a great hockey player. You don't go out and find young men of his calibre at Wal-Mart."

The 6-foot, 185-pound Alaskan speedster was expected to play left wing on the Vipers' top line and improve on the 25 goals and 54 points he put up last season.

"North Dakota has been my dream college to attend so I'm really excited to be getting this opportunity," said Bishop, who turns 19 in September.

"It was something that just came up out of nowhere. I had full intentions of being back in Vernon next season and it is very tough to be leaving the Vipers and Vernon.

"I first visited Vernon for the Pee Wee tournament and fell in love with it right away. I played three years of Junior (two in the USHL) and Vernon was by far my favourite place. It was a real tough decision to decide to leave, but I will never forget my time in Vernon."

Bishop will join Viper grads Chay Genoway and Matt Watkins in North Dakota next season.

"It's going to be a lot of fun playing with Chay again next season," said Bishop. "Having him around will definitely make the adjustment easier."

Bishop's departure leaves a large hole on Mick's bulletin board, but he's confident with the recruiting class the Vipers have coming in, that someone will step up to fill the void.

"This (surprise departure) just shows me that recruiting is never done," said Mick, who is expected to announce the commitment of a prime-time blueliner early next week. "We're thrilled with the players we have coming in, but it's tough to go out and find an all-star in the middle of June."

The Vipers open training camp Aug. 24 at the Multiplex.

The league's 60-game schedule will be unbalanced in the Interior Division. Teams in the conference will play their rivals eight times, meaning the Vipers will have two extra games against Salmon Arm and Merritt, and will play an unbalanced scheduled against the rest of the division.

The home-and-away with the Coastal Conference continues.

Vernon will open its 2006 season at home on Saturday, Sept. 9 against the Quesnel Millionaires.

The 2007 all-star game has been awarded to the Surrey Eagles in January.
